Lily (Shu QI) jobber som en bar hostess i Taiwans hovestad rundt årskiftet. Hun er lei av Taipeis natteliv og hennes kontrollerende kjæreste Hao-Hao. Hun blir kjent med en mysteriøs eldre mann ved navnet Jack som tilbyr henne å flytte til Japan sammen med han. Hou-Hsiao Hsiens dypdykk i nattlivets i Taiwan fremstår som en flytende drøm i Lilys lengsel under neonlyset og søken etter intimitet. Lily (Shi QI) is tired of her possesive DJ boyfriend, her work as a bar hostess and the night life in Taipei at the end of the century. Her only friend is a shady older man called Jack who offers her to move with him to Japan. This hypnotic and trance-like film captures not only the nightlife crowd in search of an escape under the neon-lights but also the mood around the end of the millennium.
